An Unforgettable Danube River Cruise with AmaWaterways!
Lisa and Laura have just returned from an amazing Danube River cruise with AmaWaterways, and we couldn’t be more impressed! It’s such a fantastic way to see multiple stunning cities without ever having to unpack — true hassle-free travel.
We sailed aboard the 5★ AmaMora, a beautifully designed ship with elegant surroundings and exceptional service. All meals on board were of an excellent standard, with the option of a 7-course tasting menu and a cocktail hour before dinner — such a lovely touch!
Each day offered a complimentary excursion, where knowledgeable local guides brought each destination to life. There was also plenty of free time to explore on your own.
Our cabin was spacious, comfortable, and had all the amenities you could wish for. The rooftop heated pool was the perfect spot to relax and cool off after a day of sightseeing.
We began our journey in Budapest, one of Europe’s most captivating capitals, and spent two days soaking in its rich history and beauty. From the grand Parliament Building to the fairytale Fisherman’s Bastion, every corner of the city offered something new. We loved wandering through the Central Market Hall and watching the lights of the city on an evening.
Bratislava, Slovakia 🇸🇰
Our next stop was charming Bratislava, with its cobblestoned streets and relaxed atmosphere. We joined a guided walking tour through the Old Town, admiring quirky statues, pastel façades, and the striking Bratislava Castle perched above the river. The city’s café culture was — perfect for an afternoon coffee or a taste of the local craft beer which we opted for!
Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹
Vienna was everything we imagined — elegant, musical, and full of grandeur. We toured the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, marveled at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and visited the breathtaking Austrian National Library, which truly breathtaking. For those looking to extend their cultural experience, there’s even an option to attend a classical concert featuring the works of Mozart and Strauss.
Unfortunately, our Danube adventure ended in Vienna, as this sailing was a special taster voyage for us. It was the perfect introduction to river cruising, and we truly didn’t want to leave!
However, for those continuing on the full itinerary, the journey carried on through some of Austria and Germany’s most picturesque towns and villages.
Weissenkirchen, Austria 🇦🇹
Nestled in the heart of the Wachau Valley, Weissenkirchen is surrounded by rolling vineyards and charming cobbled streets. Guests could enjoy a leisurely wine tasting at a local cellar, sampling crisp Grüner Veltliner while soaking in the valley’s breathtaking scenery — a true taste of authentic Austria.
Grein, Austria 🇦🇹
In Grein, travellers step back in time. This delightful riverside town is home to the impressive Greinburg Castle, one of Austria’s oldest residential castles, and the historic Grein Theatre, dating from the 18th century. A stroll along the promenade offers a glimpse into peaceful small-town life.
Linz, Austria 🇦🇹
Modern and creative, Linz blends history with innovation. Guests can explore the Ars Electronica Center, discover art along the riverfront, or simply relax with a slice of the city’s signature Linzertorte. It’s a perfect balance of culture and contemporary charm.
Passau, Germany 🇩🇪
Known as the “City of Three Rivers,” Passau enchants visitors with its baroque architecture and winding lanes. The magnificent St. Stephen’s Cathedral, home to one of the world’s largest pipe organs, is a must-see, and the views from Veste Oberhaus Fortress are unforgettable.
Vilshofen an der Donau, Germany 🇩🇪
The final stop, Vilshofen an der Donau, offers a warm and festive farewell. AmaWaterways hosts a Bavarian celebration complete with traditional music, local beer, and joyful atmosphere — the perfect way to end a journey along Europe’s most scenic river.
The Danube River itself was stunningly scenic, and we found the locks along the way fascinating to watch!
All in all, it was an incredible journey that exceeded all expectations — highly recommended!
