I’ve just returned from ticking off my ultimate bucket list trip — and I can honestly say I have completely fallen in love with Japan.
From super-speedy trains to spotless streets and some of the friendliest, most welcoming vibes I’ve ever experienced, Japan really is one of those “you have to see it to believe it” destinations.
We started our journey with three nights in Tokyo, a vibrant, cosmopolitan city that truly has something for everyone. We based ourselves in Asakusa, a lovely area by the river filled with temples, a more relaxed atmosphere, and plenty of fantastic places to eat. It was also a great location for getting around, with easy access to the subway and train stations.
During our time in Tokyo, we explored some of its most iconic districts. Harajuku was a must for quirky fashion and shopping, while Shibuya Crossing was just as crazy as you imagine — we even grabbed a great view from above to take it all in. Akihabara was a highlight too, especially if you love retro gaming and electronics. We also ventured into Shinjuku for its bright lights and buzzing nightlife, and Ginza for a more upscale shopping experience.
From Tokyo, we hopped on the famous Shinkansen (bullet train), travelling at an incredible 185 miles per hour, and made our way to Kyoto. Kyoto offered a beautiful contrast to Tokyo, with its traditional charm and slower pace. We stayed in a machiya house, a traditional Japanese townhouse, which was such a special experience and perfectly located for exploring.
We were incredibly lucky to visit during cherry blossom season, and seeing the trees in full bloom was truly magical — one of those unforgettable travel moments.
While in Kyoto, we explored stunning temples, wandered through the famous bamboo forest, and took a day trip to Nara. One of the real highlights of our time here was a cookery experience with a local Japanese lady in her home. We learned how to make gyozas (dumplings), miso soup, and a selection of other traditional Japanese dishes — all finished with a beautiful and authentic tea ceremony. It was such a personal and memorable way to experience the culture.
Nara was such a fun experience too — especially the deer, who will bow to you (particularly if you have crackers to feed them!).
Next stop was Osaka, where the energy shifts again to something lively and full of personality. We used Osaka as a base to visit Universal Studios Japan, including Super Nintendo World and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter — such an amazing day! We were so glad we had express passes as it was peak season and saved us a lot of time queuing.
Osaka itself had a fantastic vibe, especially in Dotonbori with its neon lights and endless food options. We also squeezed in a visit to the zoo to see the adorable red pandas!
From there, we took the Shinkansen to Hakone, a beautiful area known for its natural scenery, hot springs, and views of Mount Fuji (if you’re lucky with the weather!). We stayed in a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan), which was such a highlight — from the warm hospitality to the incredible food and relaxing onsen experience.
We then returned to Tokyo for our final two nights, which gave us the perfect opportunity for some last-minute shopping and, of course, more food! The famous Japanese convenience store egg sandwiches and the strawberry and cream sandwiches were an unexpected highlight — simple but absolutely delicious.
Japan has truly stolen my heart, and it’s a destination I would recommend to anyone looking to tick off a bucket list adventure.
