Rebecca’s Magical Mykonos

I have just returned from a magical trip to Mykonos, courtesy of Exsus Travel, where I had the opportunity to experience the wonderful Myconian Collection of five-star hotels on the island.

Mykonos is the crown jewel of the Greek Cyclades, famed for its whitewashed alleys, iconic 16th-century windmills, and vibrant beach clubs. The island perfectly blends glamorous nightlife with pristine beaches and ancient history, attracting travellers seeking both lively parties and relaxed Mediterranean luxury.

After just over a three-hour flight from London Gatwick, we touched down on the sunny island of Mykonos. A gentle breeze welcomed us as we waited in the short passport control queue, which took only around half an hour. As Mykonos is a relatively small airport, all our luggage was already waiting for us by the time we arrived at baggage reclaim.

From there, we enjoyed a short 15-minute transfer to our hotel for the duration of the stay — the wonderful five-star Myconian Ambassador. This stunning luxury hotel occupies one of the best locations on the island. The Ambassador was the first five-star hotel in Mykonos and is part of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux collection.

Located near Platis Gialos, the hotel is perfectly positioned for relaxing beach days or visiting Mykonos Town during the day or evening. It is also ideal for experiencing some of the island’s famous nightlife and beach clubs, with Scorpios and Nammos Beach both within a 10-minute walk. Nammos is particularly perfect for those who enjoy unwinding on the beach with a cocktail or two while indulging in a little designer shopping.

During the four-day trip, I was fortunate enough to visit 15 properties within the Myconian Collection. These ranged from intimate boutique hotels to larger luxury resorts and villa collections. Every property offered beautifully designed rooms with elegant décor and luxurious touches, with some suites even featuring private pools or hot tubs.

The hotels blend seamlessly into the natural beauty of the Mykonian landscape, with architecture that mirrors the curves of the hills and the rhythm of the Aegean Sea.

Greek hospitality truly is exceptional, and the quality of food served throughout the trip was outstanding. Much of the produce is sourced directly from the Myconian Collection’s own farm, embracing a sustainable zero-waste philosophy. Of course, the delicious Greek wine flowing throughout our stay was equally memorable — and impossible to refuse!

One of the highlights of the trip was an incredible walking tour of Mykonos Town and its famous windmills. Wandering through the beautiful narrow streets feels like stepping back in time, with charming shops, cafés, restaurants, and whitewashed homes lining every corner.

We also took a ferry to the nearby island of Delos, just a 25-minute journey from Mykonos. Delos is one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites and, according to mythology, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. During the first millennium BC, it was a major religious and trading centre.

Today, the island’s fascinating ruins include Doric temples, marketplaces, an amphitheatre, houses adorned with mosaics, and the iconic Terrace of the Lions statues. There is also a museum displaying many of the statues and artefacts excavated from the site.

I was lucky enough to experience every side of the island — from the rich culture and history of Delos to the winding streets of Mykonos Town, the stunning beaches with their relaxed beach clubs, and the island’s lively nightlife.

While I would say Mykonos is perhaps better suited to adults or older children, due to the many steep hills and steps across the island it may prove challenging for those with walking difficulties.

There truly is something for everyone in magical Mykonos.
