Laura P’s Costa Rica Adventure

We’ve seen a huge surge of interest in Costa Rica recently.

And honestly…its easy to see why!

This vibrant country isn’t just a beach escape (though the beaches are jaw-droppingly gorgeous). It’s an adventure-packed, wildlife-filled, culture-rich paradise that ticks all the boxes for an unforgettable holiday.

Our very own Laura Povey recently jetted off to sample its splendours for herself. She helped us put together this blog of hints and tips.

From the moment you land in the capital city, San José, you’ll feel the buzz. Think world-class museums, lush parks, lively theatres, and charming historical buildings. It’s the perfect place to stay a night before or after your journey to soak in Costa Rica’s energy before heading deeper into the wild.

And it gets wild! Costa Rica is widely recognised as the most biodiverse country on earth. Think scarlet macaws, sloths hanging from roadside trees, cheeky monkeys on your balcony, and even road-blocking basks of crocodiles (yes, really!)

Wherever you are, you’re in among the most remarkable nature, and it feels like the kind of place where every day feels like a totally new adventure.

Here are some unmissable highlights from Laura’s trip:

  • Tortuguero National Park – A boat ride through mirror-like canals surrounded by rainforest is a breathtaking experience, with lodges inside the park feeling like something out of a nature documentary! Laura didn’t get lucky, but she heard that if you visit between July and October, you might even spot sea turtles nesting on the beaches.

  • Manuel Antonio National Park – The dream combo of soft-sand beaches, rainforest hikes, and curious wildlife (sloths and monkeys galore!). It’s one of Costa Rica’s most popular National Parks, and the coastal walks in the area are amazing too.

  • Arenal Volcano – Towering, dramatic, and active! While views vary depending on activity, the hot springs nearby are a perfect way to soak up the scenery. Laura loved her tour around the base of the volcano, learning about its history, the local geography, and its interaction with nature.

  • Monteverde – Ziplining through the cloud forest? Rope bridge skywalks high above the canopy? Spotting hummingbirds swoop past in a flash of neon? Monteverde is a gorgeous green spot nestled in the hills, and its Cloud Forest is a must-visit if you’re in the area!

Laura had a dreamy time taking it all in, and her stories made us all (very!) jealous when she returned home.

But even those locations are barely scratching the surface of all this incredible country has to offer. Costa Rica is bursting with spots that will stay with you for years to come. If you’re jetting off there, do consider checking these out too:

  • La Fortuna – A charming little town near Arenal, known for its waterfalls, hot springs, and adventure activities like white-water rafting.
  • Puerto Viejo – A sleepy, edgy spot near the Panama border. Head here for laid-back beaching and winding cycle rides up the coastline.
  • Guanacaste’s Pacific beaches – For golden sands, sunsets, and some of the best surfing in the world.

Costa Rica is one of those rare destinations that truly has it all: beaches, wildlife, adventure, history, shopping, relaxation – and endless stories to bring home.

Oh, and did we mention the food? Sublime coffee, fresh fish, tacos, and fragrant gallo pinto breakfasts from little family-run eateries called ‘sodas.’ Not feeling too daring? Don’t worry – you’ll also find plenty of familiar favourites.

📅 When to go? 📅

The best time to visit is during our winter (November – April), when it’s driest. That said, the shoulder months (May, June, November) can be a little quieter and friendlier on the budget. Just avoid September and October unless you’re a rain lover!

One thing’s for sure: Costa Rica will leave you beaming from ear to ear. It’s one DREAMY sliver of land, and we’re not surprised that Pura Vida (“pure life”) is their unofficial national slogan. Laura’s already plotting her return – and we’d love to help you plan yours too…

Whether you’d like a tailor-made itinerary or an escorted tour, we’re here to help you plan a trip that’s as adventurous – or as relaxed – as you’d like.
